9 Tips on How to Eat Healthy While Traveling to Europe

Traveling to Europe is an exciting adventure filled with new experiences, sights, and, of course, flavors. However, maintaining a balanced diet while on the road can be challenging, especially with tempting treats around every corner. It's not uncommon to feel the need to start a diet or detox after returning from a vacation. Many people overindulge in delicious foods and drinks while on vacation, which can lead to weight gain and feelings of sluggishness.

The thought of having to shed those extra pounds can be overwhelming. This feeling can be uncomfortable and can lead to a sense of guilt or shame. These post-vacation blues can be especially disheartening when you realize you may have gained several pounds or inches during your trip. With a bit of planning and mindfulness, it's entirely possible to enjoy the culinary delights of Europe while still nourishing your body with balanced meals.

In this blog post, we'll explore strategies for incorporating protein-rich foods and ample vegetables into your European travel diet, ensuring you stay energized and healthy throughout your journey. I'm going to show you that it's possible to eat healthy while traveling and Ill share the tips that always help me whenever I travel to Europe.

9 Tips: Eat Healthy While Traveling

1.  Plan Ahead: You can eat healthy while traveling by planning ahead. Before embarking on your European adventure, take some time to research the local cuisine and dining options at your destination. Look for restaurants that offer a variety of protein sources, such as grilled chicken, lean steaks, fish, tofu, or legumes. Additionally, scout out grocery stores or markets where you can pick up fresh fruits and vegetables to have on hand for snacks or quick meals.

2.  Start Your Day Right: You can eat healthy while traveling by starting your day right! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when traveling. Opt for protein-rich options like eggs, yogurt, or smoked salmon paired with whole-grain bread or muesli. Look for cafes or bakeries that offer freshly squeezed juices or smoothies packed with fruits and veggies to kickstart your day with a nutritious boost.

3.  Embrace Local Flavors: You can eat healthy while traveling and also embrace local flavors! One of the joys of traveling is immersing yourself in the local culture, including its culinary traditions. Seek out traditional dishes that feature protein and vegetable-centric ingredients. In Mediterranean countries like Italy or Greece, indulge in grilled fish served with a side of roasted vegetables or a Greek salad. Exploring local markets can also provide insight into seasonal produce and inspire healthy meal ideas. The Mediterranean diet is one of my favorites, so I always try to gather new recipe ideas while traveling.

4.  Snack Smart: You can eat healthy while traveling by choosing to snack smart. When hunger strikes between meals, opt for nutrient-dense snacks to keep you fueled and satisfied. Pack portable options like nuts, seeds, fresh fruit, or veggie sticks with hummus for a protein-packed pick-me-up. Avoid the temptation of sugary treats and opt for healthier alternatives to maintain steady energy levels throughout the day. One thing that helped me was packing my protein bars. It's always good to have 15-20 grams of protein available when you feel like you're getting hangry.

5.  Balance Your Plate: You can eat healthy while traveling by eating balanced meals. When dining out, aim to create a balanced plate by including a combination of protein, vegetables, and whole grains. Choose dishes incorporating lean protein sources, such as grilled chicken, lean steak, turkey, or tofu, and plenty of colorful vegetables. Swap out fries or chips for steamed vegetables or a side salad to boost your veggie intake without sacrificing flavor.

6.  Stay Hydrated: You can eat healthy while traveling by staying hydrated. Proper hydration is essential for overall health and well-being, especially when traveling. Carry a reusable water bottle with you, and aim to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. You'll notice it's easy to find water fountains when traveling in Europe; the water is very clean and pure. One word of caution: make sure the fountains aren't labeled eau non-potable—meaning “not for drinking” in French. Opt for water instead of sugary beverages to support optimal hydration. By making this simple change, you'll be taking an important step towards maintaining good health.

7.  Practice Moderation: You can eat healthy while traveling by practicing moderation! While indulging in local delicacies is part of the travel experience, practice moderation to avoid overindulgence. Allow yourself to enjoy treats in moderation while prioritizing balanced meals that nourish your body. Listen to your hunger and fullness cues and savor each bite mindfully to appreciate the flavors and textures of the food. A healthy lifestyle doesn't mean you can't enjoy a fresh croissant. Moderation is key.

8.  Be Flexible: You can eat healthy while traveling by being flexible! Flexibility is key when it comes to eating well while traveling. Embrace the spontaneity of your journey, and don't stress over every meal. If your dining options are limited or you find yourself in a situation where healthy choices are scarce, do the best you can with what's available and focus on enjoying the experience.

9. Don't Skip Meals: You can eat healthy while traveling by avoiding the temptation of skipping meals. This might seem like a quick solution when you're on the go, but it can actually do more harm than good. Your body needs a steady supply of nutrients to keep you energized and focused throughout the day, making it important not to skip meals. Skipping meals can lead to fatigue and irritability, affecting your travel experience. It may also cause you to overeat later on as your body tries to compensate for the missed calories. By prioritizing regular meals and snacks, you can keep your energy levels stable, maintain focus, and enjoy all the adventures Europe offers without missing a beat.

Implementing these tips can transform your European travel experience, allowing you to enjoy the rich culinary traditions without compromising your health or energy levels. Eating healthy while traveling helps maintain your physical well-being and enhances your mental clarity and overall mood, making your travel adventures even more enjoyable. Choosing nutritious options will give you the energy to fully explore Europe's cities, trails, and cultural experiences. Remember, it's all about balance and making conscious choices that align with your health goals and travel desires.

Balanced Breakfast at Hotels

In Europe, hotels typically serve a different breakfast style than you might find in the US. Picture this: at breakfast buffets, you'll see stations where you can get omelets made just how you like them, with all sorts of veggies as fillings. Then, there are plates of fresh cold cuts and cheeses, along with bowls of colorful fruits and DIY yogurt stations with lots of yummy toppings. And let's not forget about the smell of freshly baked bread! It's all there to help you start your day right. The cool thing about European hotel breakfasts is that they give you many choices, so you can make healthy decisions and put together a meal that keeps you feeling good for your adventures. Whether you're into a big, hearty omelet or a light fruit salad, European hotel breakfasts have something for everyone.

Staying at an Airbnb

You can find cool markets in Europe where locals sell fresh foods. If you're staying at an Airbnb or a rental with a kitchen, this is great news! You can buy all sorts of fresh stuff like fruits, veggies, meat, and fish. Now, you can easily prepare healthy and delicious meals in the comfort of your own rental. You can make roasted fresh veggies or some delicious fish straight from the market. Shop for spices and ask for recipe ideas while purchasing fresh foods. They're always happy to share ideas. It's not just about food, though - shopping at these markets is also a great way to try authentic foods, and you also help out small businesses. So, it's a win-win: you get to eat well and support the community at the same time!

Traveling to Europe is a foodie's dream come true! You'll find so many delicious dishes to try and exciting culinary adventures to learn from. By prioritizing protein-rich meals and incorporating plenty of vegetables into your diet, you can enjoy the flavors of Europe while still maintaining a balanced and nutritious eating plan. With some planning, flexibility, and mindfulness, you can savor every moment of your journey while nourishing your body from the inside out. Bon appétit and safe travels!
