The Best 5 steps to identifying true hunger and cravings

We’ve all been there before. You’re standing in front of the fridge, looking for something to eat even though you just had a meal an hour ago. But is this true hunger, or are you experiencing cravings? Before making meal choices, it’s essential to distinguish between true hunger and cravings. Recognizing the difference can help you make better food choices and avoid excessive calories.

What is true hunger?

True hunger is physical and arises when your body actually needs nourishment. For example, you might feel a growling stomach, low energy levels, or lightheadedness when you’re truly hungry. These are signs that your body needs food and should eat something healthy. True hunger generally comes on gradually over several hours. So, it’s probably not true hunger if you want food shortly after a meal. This is especially true if you’re craving specific foods, such as those high in sugar or fat.

What are cravings?

Cravings or false hunger are triggered by emotional factors, such as boredom, stress, anxiety, depression, or even happiness. Foods high in sugar or fat are especially likely to cause cravings. So if you want these types of foods even when you’re not hungry, it’s probably a craving.

Cravings can be difficult to resist because they’re not based on actual hunger. You might feel like you need the food even though your body doesn’t need it. This is why it’s important to recognize the difference between true hunger and cravings.

Before eating, consider these five tips

1. Check in with your body. Are you really hungry, or do you have cravings? If it’s the latter, try drinking a glass of water or waiting 20 minutes to see if the feeling goes away.

2. Consider what you’re craving. For example, a candy bar or bag of chips might give you a quick fix but will leave you unsatisfied an hour later. If you’re truly hungry, opt for something that will give your body sustained energy, like some nuts or fruit instead.

3. Pay attention when you get hungry. If you find yourself wanting to eat every few hours, chances are you’re grazing rather than experiencing true hunger. Try scheduling meals and snacks at regular intervals throughout the day, so you’re not tempted to snack outside of mealtimes.

4. How’s your energy level? If you’re feeling sluggish and low on energy, it might be time to eat something. Likewise, if you’re so famished that your stomach is growling loudly, that’s also a good indication that it’s time to eat.

5. Listen to your fullness cues. Once you start eating, pay attention to how your body feels. Are you still hungry, or are you starting to feel full? It can be easy to munch away mindlessly, but it’s important to listen to your body and stop eating when you’re no longer hungry.

So, let’s recap! Recognizing the difference between true hunger and cravings can help you make better food choices and avoid excessive calories. True hunger is physical and arises when your body actually needs nourishment.

For example, you might feel a growling stomach, low energy levels, or lightheadedness when you’re truly hungry. These are signs that your body needs food and that you should eat something healthy.

Cravings, however, are often triggered by emotional factors, and foods high in sugar or fat are especially likely to trigger them. So if you want these foods even when you’re not hungry, it’s probably a craving. Being mindful of the difference between the two can help ensure that you’re making the best choices for your health!
